JEDDAH. Robert de Guzman protected top post with survival game to secure the men’s division title while May Lourdes with a humble start, ensured ladies crown with three outstanding sets to be the Bowlers of 2012 at the conclusion of the grueling year round quest for the most prestigious accolade of the Filipino Expatriate Damayan Bowling Group at the Bowling City here.
De Guzman was actually among the bottom dwellers during the desperado match, wherein Marcelo Manalo and Melvin Lising got qualified to finals with 936 and 852 among the monthly champions and Ronnie de Castro with 861 made it from the class periodic winners. But de Guzman’s aspiration for the long awaited opportunity for the title shot heightened his adrenalin especially when he started at par to top-finish the semifinals with 887, looking down on Jay Bengco and Abdulfatta Mogawan who contended with 878 and 845 respectively. Richard Antonio missed the border with 828.
Bowling along with the seeded finalists, de Guzman sustained contention at 220 seizures of the top post as Mogawan and Lising paced close with 199 and 191. With the finalists rolling at average de Guzman uphold leadership at 399 as Mogawan tightened challenge with 393 and top favorite Manalo appeared on striking distance with 370. Alarmed by the threat, de Guzman widened gap at 612 on a 213 extrication making it more manageable space from 562 challenge of Mogawan. The ultimate game was then the most daring salvage for de Guzman as he saw Lising rallying and veteran Mogawan was firmly consistent. Pressure engulfed de Guzman with these occurrences resulting in errors and misses. Thanks to his perseverance. De Guzman stayed afloat with 175 to save the most coveted Men’s Bowler of the Year title on 4-game series with handicap of 787. Mogawan upheld second place at 758, the 206 last blitz of Lising ranked him at third with 753 while Manalo, Bengco and de Castro got consoled of the last three prizes on respective finish of 737, 728 and 722.
On the ladies division, Lourdes lowly started with 166 to be behind early leader Malou Gime with 180. Mariz Resano, Grace Funtilon and Aileen Miralbuna were pacing with 161, 158, 152. Such ignition turned out warmer for Lourdes to seize top spot with 376 on 210 flare up as Gime sliding to second with 367. Intensifying her domination, Lourdes bettered her clutch at 221 to fortify front seat at 597. Funtilon with 213 pursuits is now the nearest threat with 556 pushing Gime to third with 527. With no contestant gearing for a grab, Lourdes took the FEDBG Ladies Bowler of the Year crown on 799 total including her 202 sealer. Funtilon escaped a pin from Gime (713) to salvage second place at 714. Miralbuna and Resano embraced fourth and fifth places. This FEDBG Bowler of the Year quest has been supported by L’ Occitane through Eva Garcia.
