Bowling Tip 5 "Methods of Aiming the Ball"
# 1 When you first get onto the approach:
1) Stand where you normally stand for the strike ball.
2) If the strike is carrying, stay where you are. If the strike in NOT carrying, you must make an adjustment.
3) If you need to have the BALL HOOK MORE to come into the 1-3 pocket, you can :
MOVE UP ON THE LANE 1/2 step. SHORTER STEPS on the approach to get to the same place on the foul line will make you walk a little slower which will give the ball a chance to hook a little more. Most bowlers do not think about this, they will just move right on the lane instead.KEEP the SAME SPEED that you normally have though.
You can also HOLD THE BALL DOWN LOWER. This will make your back swing lower as well, and will slow the ball down which will allow it to hook more.
You can SPREAD the POINTER AND PINKY FINGERS APART which will turn the ball a little more equalling a bigger hook.
4) If you need the ball to HOOK LESS, you can make the following adjustments:
MOVE BACK ON THE LANE. This will cause you to take longer steps and go a little faster on the approach for the pendulum swing to be in sync with the rest of the body, which will increase the speed of the ball and this will DECREASE the HOOK on your ball.
If you spread your fingers all the time like I do, then you can put them closer together. This will decrease the turn on the ball slightly and therefor decrease the hook slightly.
5) When you make an adjustment from where you stand, you must also make an adjustment from what mark you are throwing at. In other words,
IF YOU MOVE 3 BOARDS TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT FROM WHERE YOU STAND, YOU MUST ALSO MAKE A THREE BOARD ADJUSTMENT WHERE YOU ARE AIMING THE BALL.
